It is something to which we all aspire. Or is it? Do some of us intentionally ruin opportunities to reach our goals? Do we find ways to fall just short of obtaining short-term or even long-term goals? Believe it or not, some people may just do so. Such actions may actually be a part of a fear of success. Fear of success can take on many forms. According to the authors of Coping.org, fear of success can be a ââ¬Å"lack of belief in your own ability to sustain your progressâ⬠or ââ¬Å"fear that you will find no happiness in yourâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s probably because if you look at the corporate world, men dominate in high positions,â⬠she says. ââ¬Å"Black women work extra, extra hard to even get there.â⬠Dillard says, ââ¬Å"Women already have a double strike against them. Their view of success is already shaded.â⬠Labbe thinks that environment is one of the leading contributing factors to the fear of success. ââ¬Å"Some people are submissive,â⬠she says. ââ¬Å"Some people believe that they should be assertive. Some people feel that if they are assertive that means that they are aggressive.â⬠She also explains that there is a tendency to look at African-American assertiveness or aggressiveness as being crude or rude and to no see the real person. The students have other ideas. ââ¬Å"Maybe no self assurance in oneself and not believing in oneself will lead to fears,â⬠says Dillard. Franklin feels it mostly boils down to peer pressure. All the women agreed that competition plays a role in fear of success. ââ¬Å"African-American women will have to compete with white men then white women then black men,â⬠says Dillard. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re afraid they will not be successful.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know one girl who had older siblings who went to college, and they all did well,â⬠Franklin recalls. ââ¬Å"She was expected to do well also. So there is family pressure.
